Qaya Way West Transportation (formerly Way West Water Taxi) was founded in 1996 and has established itself as a leader for the safe and efficient transportation of people and freight, serving over 150 locations from its base of operations at the Coast Marina in beautiful Campbell River, BC (right beside the BC Ferries Terminal). Serving the North Island, Discovery Islands, Gulf Islands and beyond, the company is positioned for growth. Recently acquired by Homalco First Nation (late 2023), Qaya Way West Transportation continues to adjust business to the needs of our valued customers, constantly re-evaluating product offerings, scheduled routes and establishing new markets.

 Available Positions

We are currently looking for: On Site Skipper, and a Seasonal Dock Hand

Responsibilities

Skipper:

• Become familiar with all vessels in the fleet, clearly understanding unique characteristics of all vessels from handling, power, navigation and safety equipment, warning alarms as well as
passenger and load restrictions.


• Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure vessels are operational ready for trips prior to
departure following a pre-departure checklist. Ensure shutdown procedures are also followed
for each trip as well as daily, weekly, and monthly procedures and vessel maintenance/
cleaning.


• Ensuring proper and efficient radio communication is always followed.


• Participate in all emergency drills, training sessions, feedback sessions and staff meetings as
required, in our culture of “Sharing Fearlessly.”


• Report any deficiency with vessels through internal service order requests in a timely way.


• Have familiarity with all routes and understanding alternative routes at times of inclement
weather conditions or other concerns.


• Efficiently load and unload vessels in correlation with booked stops, ensuring all freight is
clearly marked, managed with care and that are proper loading and lifting procedures are
followed.


• Have sufficient knowledge to effectively troubleshoot, identify, and efficiently repair minor
deficiencies with vessels allowing vessels to safety return to the marina where possible.


• Ensure all vessels comply with Transport Canada Marine Safety Regulations as a minimum
expectation and recommend suggestions to ensure we are always doing more than required
with our priority being safety.


• Skippers are required to regularly conduct inventory of safety equipment on board and may be asked for other data like engine hours or on-board data to help diagnose deficiencies. Ensure functionality of all vessel alarms and warning systems and ensure Skippers have good working knowledge of alarms and warning signals and a working knowledge on what steps to take for each potential alarm. Order and carry a suitable inventory of parts and supplies for
maintenance and repair of outboard and inboard engines and marine systems.


• Flexibility to work extended hours or altered schedules according to business volumes.


• Maintain effective communication and working relationships with colleagues and vendors,
stakeholders, title holders, service providers and customers.


• Ensure tools, equipment, and other supplies are stored neatly, in sufficient supply, in good repair and safely stored.


• To maintain service logs, key data used to schedule maintenance, both minor and major as well as to keep all vessels at optimal performance.


• Promote and adhere to safety standards for employee and guest health and safety.


• Other tasks as needed.

Dockhand:

• Become familiar with all vessels in the fleet, knowing load capacities, safety equipment on
board and learning starts up procedures and closing procedures.


• Conduct pre-work inspections to ensure freight space is well organized for the day, clean and
organized. Report any hazards or potential hazards after a walk through of working space and
using the checklist for identifying hazards. Ensure that the passenger lounge is clean, unlocked,
and ready for the start of business.


• In conjunction with skippers, ensure vessels are operational ready for trips prior to departure
following a pre-departure checklist. Ensure shutdown procedures are also followed for each
trip as well as daily, weekly, and monthly procedures and vessel maintenance/ cleaning.

 

• Ensuring proper and efficient radio communication is always followed.
 

• Participate in all emergency drills, training sessions, feedback sessions and staff meetings as
required, in our culture of “Sharing Fearlessly.”

 

• Report any deficiency with vessels or operational space through internal service order requests
in a timely way.

 

• Have familiarity with all routes and understanding alternative routes at times of inclement
weather conditions or other concerns to relay information to guests.

 

• Efficiently load and unload vessels in correlation with booked stops, ensuring all freight is
clearly marked, managed with care and that are proper loading and lifting procedures are
followed.

 

• Assist Skippers especially in inclement weather to safely dock vessels by catching lines and
helping tie off vessels (knowledge of marine knots is considered an asset).

 

• Assist office staff with directing guests, handling freight inquiries and assist with the booking
desk (as needed).

 

• Flexibility to work extended hours or altered schedules according to business volumes.
 

• Maintain effective communication and working relationships with colleagues and vendors,
stakeholders, title holders, service providers and customers.

 

• Ensure tools, equipment, and other supplies are stored neatly, in sufficient supply, in good
repair and safely stored.

 

• Promote and adhere to safety standards for employee and guest health and safety.
 

• Other tasks as needed.
